Glassboro seeking to repeat in Group 1

Corey Clement admits to getting a little fatigued at times. The Glassboro junior rarely leaves the field and has a major impact as a running back and defensive end.

Of course, it's running the ball, where the 5-foot-11, 205-pound Clement has gained notice. This season, he has is averaging more than a first down per carry (10.4 yards) and has set several single-season records for the Bulldogs, who meet Pennsville in Saturday's 10 a.m. South Jersey Group 1 final across the street from Glassboro High at Rowan University.

Story continues below.

"I have to admit I get a little tired at times," Clement said, laughing. "But I am so excited to be playing in this championship game."

Clement rushed for 1,205 yards (7.53 average) and 15 touchdowns as Glassboro won last year's South Jersey Group 1 title.

This season, he has rushed for 2,272 yards and 30 touchdowns on 218 carries while running his way into the Glassboro record books. He already owns the single-season records for rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns.

It's even more impressive considering the top backs Glassboro has produced, which include former Penn State fullback Sean Redmond, Heisman Trophy candidate Gordie Lockbaum of Holy Cross and current Rutgers freshman P.J. James.

"It's not our goal to stop Corey in the championship game. He's too good to use the word 'stop,' " Pennsville coach Ryan Wood said.

Wood sees competing against Clement as a true challenge.

"My guys love playing against great players and great teams," Wood said. "Regardless of the outcome of any game, we want to play against the best."

Few have been better.

Clement has rushed for 3,684 career yards. According to South Jersey historian Chuck Langerman, the all-time career rushing mark in South Jersey is 5,380 by Ocean City's Kevin Sinclair, whose final season was 1996.

Clement isn't worried about the numbers. All he wants is the letter 'W' following South Jersey Group 1 title game.

"I could gain zero yards and if we win, that is all that matters," he said.

Glassboro is trying to avenge a 55-35 loss to Pennsville earlier this season. Not only will Clement be kept busy carrying the ball, he likely will be a vital player on the defense line after beginning the season at strong safety.

Clement will need a strong pass rush on sophomore quarterback Dylan Cummings who has thrown for 2,771 yards and 34 touchdowns. Ryan Hawthorne has caught 51 passes for 1,010 yards and 12 touchdowns and has rushed for 10 touchdowns. Colton Newsome has added 50 receptions for 922 yards and 14 touchdowns.

In the earlier loss against Pennsville, Clement rushed for 280 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries. He will likely be a little tired on Saturday but no more so than the defenders who will have to chase him all over the field at Rowan.
