Holy Spirit romps to state title

EWING - There no secret to Holy Spirit's game plan.

It was Donta Pollock right and Nigel Jones left. It was Pollock up the middle and Jones off tackle.

Camden Catholic knew what was coming. But the Irish couldn't stop the Spartans.

Pollock and Jones ran for a combined 454 yards and seven touchdowns as Holy Spirit overwhelmed Camden Catholic, 51-7, in the Non-Public 2 state championship game Friday night at the College of New Jersey.

"We knew we could run the ball," Holy Spirit coach Chalie Roman said. "We felt like up front, they couldn't handle us."

Holy Spirit (8-3), the No. 2 seed and No. 8 team in The Inquirer's South Jersey rankings, dominated the game with its punishing, physical approach, using a two-tight-end formation and a massive offensive line that featured center Dom LaFragola, guards A.J. Thomas and Nico D'Angelo, and tackles Steve Domonoski and Joe Bodenlos.

The Spartans also received road-clearing work from tight end Zach Fabel, Ethan Gambale, and Dan Mastromatteo.

"I love those guys," Jones of his blockers. "They make it easy for us."

Senior Mike Blandon ran 68 yards for a touchdown on the fifth play from scrimmage for the highlight for top-seeded Camden Catholic (10-1), the No. 3 team in the rankings.

Pollock ran 32 times for 265 yards and three touchdowns. Jones ran 26 times for 189 yards and four touchdowns.

Pollock and Jones are the first set of classmates in New Jersey history to rush for more than 4,000 career yards.

Holy Spirit won its third state title, all since 2007, and second in a row. The Spartans won the Non-Public 3 title last season.

The victory capped an odd season in which Holy Spirit was No. 1 in the preseason rankings but lost three times in its first six games - once by forfeit and then by lopsided scores to St. Joseph and Hammonton.

"We had some rough spots, but this is the way we wanted to finish," Pollock said.

The Spartans scored on their first six possessions and eight of nine. They collected 229 rushing yards and 16 first downs in the first half. They converted a third-and-6, a third-and-11 and third-and-13 with running plays.

Mastromatteo, a North Carolina recruit, led the defense from outside linebacker along with fellow linebacker Gambale. The Spartans held the Irish to two first downs in the first half.

"We saw on film it was going to be a huge challenge," Camden Catholic coach Gil Brooks said. "They are just so physical."
