Big East Tournament Preview By MIKE KERN, kernm@phillynews.com We're most looking forward to: Seeing how much of an impact a resurgent St. John's can have on this thing for a change. Forget that late loss at Seton Hall. The Red Storm is relevant for the first time in a decade. It has beaten five top 15 teams in Madison Square Garden already. New Yorkers have waited a long time, so the place should be crazed. Good time to be a scalper. St. John's hasn't been past the quarterfinals since beating Connecticut in 2000 title game. Team on the rise: Actually, there are many. Notre Dame has won 11 of 12, and St. John's seven of eight. Syracuse has a five-game winning streak, while Louisville had a four-game winning streak snapped at West Virginia on Saturday. The Mountaineers have won four of five, with the loss at Pittsburgh. Even Cincinnati has won five of six. So take your pick. But only one will be playing at home. Team on the decline: Villanova, for the second straight season. Last year, the Wildcats went to New York having lost four of six. Then they lost to Marquette in the 4-5 matchup. This time, they have lost four straight, all to ranked opponents, and six of eight. They obviously could use a win or two, if only to feel better about themselves heading into the Madness. But at this point, who knows what to expect. Georgetown, which started 1-4 in the conference, also lost four of its last five. Worth noting: Connecticut, which has lost four of five itself, hasn't advanced in this tourney since 2005. That's five straight losses, including an epic six-overtimer against Syracuse 2years ago in the quarterfinals as a third seed. Those Huskies, though, did reach the Final Four. Dark horse to win it all: I'd like to go with Syracuse, but the Orange might have to beat St. John's and Pittsburgh just to reach the final. With so much quality, it's hard to see a team that has to play four games lifting a trophy. That said, how about Louisville, even if it is only the third seed? The Cardinals lost at Notre Dame in overtime and beat Pitt, St. John's and Syracuse, albeit all at home. Plus they won it in 2009. Team that needs help to make the NCAAs: I think 11 are getting in regardless. It's the Big East for a reason. But just in case, Marquette couldn't hurt its case by adding another win to the old résumé. Best player: Through January, it would have been UConn's Kemba Walker. Over the last month, the nod probably goes to St. John's Dwight Hardy, though you could make a case for Notre Dame's Ben Hansbrough. Best shooter: Pitt's Ashton Gibbs converts nearly 47 percent from the arc, and close to 89 at the foul line. Hard to go against that. Overall, Philly product Rick Jackson, of Syracuse, makes almost 60 percent. Don't foul this guy: Villanova's Corey Stokes makes nearly 90 percent of his freebies. Ultimate title game: St. John's vs. just about anyone, just because. Or, if you're into the top 10, Pitt-Notre Dame. The dreaded pick: Tiger Woods. Oops, wrong tourney. Notre Dame made the semifinals last March, for only the second time (other was 2002). So history is not on the side of the Irish, who for whatever reason don't seem to get enough love. Still, I've always liked Mike Brey from his days at Delaware. So why not? Of course, this means they'll probably lose their opener. - Mike Kern
