Malvern rallies to shock La Salle

Posted: January 01, 2012

Malvern Prep rallied from a seven-point deficit in the last minute of the game, capped by Steve Perpiglia's three-point basket with 3 seconds left as the unbeaten Friars stunned host La Salle, 56-55, on Saturday in one of three dramatic nonleague boys' basketball games on New Year's Eve.

Ryan Winslow's 14 points helped the Explorers (3-5) to a 55-48 lead before Malvern started its rally. Tom Pitt, who finished with 17 points, hit a pair of dunks to close the gap to 55-52 with 38 seconds to go. Perpiglia made the first of two foul shots with 20 seconds left, and after Pitt stole an inbounds pass, Perpiglia connected on his game-winner.

Pitt scored 11 fourth-quarter points.

Father Judge needed three overtimes to get past visiting Penn Charter, 77-68. Judge tied the game with two Steve Griffin (17 points) foul shots and Malik Robinson's offensive-rebound basket in the final 5 seconds of regulation before Griffin finished with six points in the extra periods.

Shaquior Cooper (15) converted eight foul shots in an 18-3 overtime period as Olney edged visiting Mastery Charter South, 72-57.
