UNLIKE BASEBALL, there is crying in football. And a whole lot more if you're in the New York Jets locker room the day after the season ends.

Jets coach Rex Ryan got so emotional he shed tears while addressing his team yesterday.

"He was crying because he loves us," guard Matt Slauson told the Associated Press. "He respects us, he knows what we are capable of and we didn't even come close to our goals."

The Jets - who had gone to the AFC Championship Game the past two seasons - lost to the Dolphins 19-17 on Sunday to finish 8-8.

Ryan isn't Dick Vermeil, but yesterday wasn't the first time he cried in public.

Two years ago, after a loss to the Jaguars, he showed at a news conference with a box of tissues and quipped, "I've got a new sponsor. The Jets have Toyota and I've got Kleenex, for obvious reasons."

Ryan wasn't the only Jet making news yesterday.

There was fallout surrounding wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who was benched late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game after arguing with teammates in the huddle.

Holmes, who didn't make a reception for the first time in his 88-game career, refused to comment as he left the locker room carrying a box and a helmet yesterday.

But, according to an ESPNNewYork.com report, trouble had been brewing long before Sunday's game.

The website, citing team sources, reported that Holmes and quarterback Mark Sanchez exchanged words in a meeting last week.

One source said Holmes was "pouting the whole time" during the meeting.

"I had a feeling it was going to explode," another source said.

Last, but certainly not least, there was linebacker Bart Scott's classy response to a report that he might not be back next season.

"All I know is I've got a guaranteed contract for $4 million," he told the Associated Press. He then cursed at a photographer, held up his middle finger and said, "Take a picture of this."
