McDevitt pins mat loss on St. Joseph’s Prep

Bishop McDevitt won just six of 14 weight classes, but all were by pin, and the Lancers got past host St. Joseph's Prep, 36-28, in Catholic League wrestling on Sunday.

After falling behind by 16-0, McDevitt started its comeback with a second-period pin by Martin Stanton (17-3) at 170 pounds.

Joshua Velez-Arce (18-2) scored a pin in 45 seconds at 106 pounds to provide a 30-22 lead, and Tyler Medina iced the verdict at 113 with a first-period fall.

Seven of St. Joseph's Prep's eight victories were by decision.

Boys' Basketball

Archbishop Ryan converted 13 of 16 fourth-quarter foul shots, including 5 of 6 by Nick Aughenbaugh, and held off visiting La Salle, 49-46, in Catholic League play.

Aughenbaugh finished with 12 points and seven steals, 6-foot-1 center Christian Rivera was 6 for 6 from the floor for 16 points, and Kyle Slawter added seven assists.

Nonleague. Jerome Alexander, who will attend the Naval Academy in the fall, scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Hill School defeated the Navy JV squad, 66-60, at Annapolis.

Philadelphia Electrical jumped out to a 27-15 halftime lead and notched a 71-40 victory over Digital Harbor of Baltimore during a four-team showcase at Baltimore City Community College on Saturday night.

David George collected 13 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots, Jai Williams added 14 points and 13 boards, and Hakeem Baxter had 14 points, eight assists and three steals for Electrical.

 

Girls' Basketball

Archbishop Carroll, ranked No. 1 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, followed Kristie Costantino's 12 points, five rebounds and five steals to a 57-48 victory over St. Anthony (N.Y.) in the New York-Philly Challenge at St. Dominic of Long Island.

Costantino made 7 of 8 foul shots as Carroll went 15 of 16 at the line. Meghan Creighton, the game's leading scorer with 23 points, converted all of her six foul shots.

Also at Long Island, Lower Merion outscored Mepham (N.Y.) by 11-0 in the fourth quarter to claim a 41-31 win. Jessie Porter scored 13 points and Rosie Stahler had 12 for the Aces.

Ninth-ranked Archbishop Wood got 11 points from Lauren Nealon and led at halftime, but dropped a 42-37 verdict to Long Island Lutheran.
