Flyers Notes: Hand injury can't sideline Flyers' Timonen

Posted: January 08, 2012

Kimmo Timonen, the Flyers' ever-dependable defenseman, played in Saturday's 3-2 overtime win against Ottawa despite a left hand injury that limited his minutes in Thursday's triumph over Chicago.

The 36-year-old not only made his 224th consecutive appearance, but logged a team-high 25 minutes, 45 seconds over 35 shifts. His streak was in jeopardy after playing just 5:32 against the Blackhawks.

"Well, to be honest, I've seen better days," he said. "But you have to play through some injuries, and that's been part of my career."

While it was first reported that the injury occurred during Monday's Winter Classic against the Rangers, Timonen said Saturday that it came during his first shift vs. Chicago.

"Well, it's my lower hand so everything I do with the stick, it hurts," Timonen said. "But, like I said, it wasn't the type of injury where I couldn't play."

Timonen posted his 24th assist of the season on Danny Briere's third-period equalizer.

Quotable I

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette on Briere's second-period fight with Senators forward Kyle Turris: "[Briere] probably gave up three to four inches. He's not a big guy. It gave our bench a lift."

Quotable II

Briere, who produced his fifth career hat trick, on possibly dropping the gloves more often: "I'm not planning on it, to be honest. I'll leave that to Jody [Shelley]."
