St. Joseph's Prep tops Father Judge, 71-57

After a slow start, St. Joseph's Prep hit high gear in a 22-5 second-quarter run and collected a 71-57 Catholic League boys' basketball win at Father Judge on Monday night.

Judge took an eight-point lead into the second period before Prep's Stephen Vasturia scored 15 of his game-high 31 points in the second quarter, giving the Hawks, ranked No. 8 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, the lead for good.

Vasturia also had 13 rebounds and four assists, and Gene Williams registered seven boards and five assists. Judge's Steven Griffin gunned in 29 points.

Also in the Catholic League, Archbishop Carroll subdued host Lansdale Catholic, 58-22, with Yosef Yacob's 13 points, four rebounds and four assists, plus Derrick Jones' 11 points and eight boards.

Archbishop Wood got 10 points in each of the first two quarters from Pat Smith, who finished with 34 points and controlled a 58-40 win at West Catholic.

Bicentennial. Holy Ghost Prep followed Tom Heston's 10 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists to a 59-33 triumph over visiting Devon Prep.

Public. Carlton Wright missed the first but made the second of two foul shots with three seconds left to lift Freire Charter to a 50-49 triumph over visiting Strawberry Mansion in a Division B game. Wright had seven rebounds and four assists, and Jahyde Gardiner notched 15 points, seven boards and four blocks.

Shaquille Bowman completed a three-point play with 15 seconds remaining that gave Esperanza the lead and the Scorpions held on for a 66-63 win over visiting Paul Robeson. Bowman saved 15 of his game-high 28 points for the fourth quarter and also snagged 15 rebounds in the contest.

Three first-quarter three-point baskets by Yahmir Greenlee (21 points) ignited Boys' Latin's 62-51 win at West Philadelphia.

Nonleague. La Salle snapped a five-game losing streak with a 70-30 win over visiting New Media Charter. The Explorers hit 13 three-pointers, including four by Stephen Smith (13 points).

Diante Lunsford hit 19 points and Khayri Washington had 17 among 10 players who contributed points to University City's 82-57 win over visiting Architecture & Design.

Kelly Sanders' four foul shots in the closing minutes allowed Pennsylvania School for the Deaf to hold on for a 50-48 win over visiting Renaissance Academy.
