"I think we're proving that we're very well-rounded," Washington Township coach Jen Natale said after her Minutemaids knocked off Bishop Eustace, 67-53, Tuesday night, marking the 100th win in Natale's six years as the team's coach.
"Winning my 100th game is great, but it's secondary. Our team is playing such great basketball right now."
The win was the eighth straight for the Minutemaids (8-1) after they lost to Shawnee in the season opener.
Identical-twin sophomore guards Kelly and Kylie Giedemann are the team's budding young stars, but Tuesday night, the supporting cast made a strong case for itself.
Kylie Giedemann (10 points) was in foul trouble early and Kelly Giedemann (21 points) wasn't scoring at her usual pace in the first half.
The Minutemaids frontcourt dominated the boards, and a strong defensive effort put Washington Township ahead by 30-19 at halftime.
"Kelly and Kylie are phenomenal," Natale said. ". . . But I think as every game goes on, we have more kids stepping up and contributing."
Cosgrove netted seven of her nine points in the second quarter. She also had eight rebounds. Centers Maureen Fleming (7 points) and Jess Monte (10 points, 5 rebounds) also asserted themselves under the basket. And senior Paige Anastasi (two points) played her usual stingy defense.
"The whole team is really clicking right now," Anastasi said. "We've all been working hard at practice, and that intensity carries over into games."
Of course, both twins came alive in the second half, as they usually do.
Kelly Giedemann hit long-range treys on consecutive possessions in the third quarter to put her team up by 42-25. She also hit 6 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter.
Bishop Eustace (6-3) turned on its outside shooting in the second half. Senior guard Jackie Brown, scoreless in the first half, scored 21 in the second.
But the Minutemaids were relentless. The tireless effort by the team's post players stood out as much as the overwhelming talent of the twins.
"I think sometimes people think, 'Oh, they only have the twins,' " Kylie Giedemann said. "But no, we have a team filled with players who can score. And without them, we wouldn't be winning games."
