Man, 30, charged in two New Year's Eve killings

Police have charged a 30-year-old man in the slayings of a man and a woman shot in North Philadelphia just before midnight on New Year's Eve.

Kevin Brown, 30, was charged with murder Monday in the shootings of Arlette Aguero, 31, and Alejandro Garro, 34, as they sat in a car parked in the 5600 block of North Second Street in the city's Olney section.

Police said the motive stemmed from an argument between Brown and Aguero, but said they could not say what it was about. Police do not believe there was any romantic relationship between the two, said Philadelphia Capt. James Clark.

"We just know there was bad blood," Clark said, "And as a result of that, he lured her to that location, walked up to her, had a very brief conversation, and just started firing into the car."

Garro was a bystander who just happened to be with Aguero that night and did not know Brown, Clark said.

Aguero, of the 4700 block of Tampa Street, and Garro, of the 7300 block of Dungan Road, were shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene.

With help from tipsters, homicide detectives quickly identified Brown as their suspect. About 1 a.m. Monday, police pulled over Brown's car at Frankford and Lehigh Avenues for a traffic violation and arrested him.

Brown's last known address was not immediately available.
