Floyd: Let's do it, Manny

January 11, 2012|DAILY NEWS WIRE REPORTS

FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. has taken his quest for a fight with Manny Pacquiao to Twitter. The unbeaten Mayweather publicly challenged and taunted the Filipino superstar yesterday, daring Pacquiao to meet him May 5 in Las Vegas.

"Manny Pacquiao I'm calling you out let's fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see," Mayweather tweeted.

Pacquiao met with his promoter Bob Arum in the Philippines, the Los Angeles Times reported, and decided the best course for pursuing a fight date against Mayweather is to schedule it for late May, or, ideally, June 9.

Story continues below.

Mayweather faces a June 1 date to report for an already-delayed 90-day jail term in a domestic violence case, but Arum said he'd be "willing to chip in for lawyers' fees" to get that date moved again so a June 9 bout could occur.

Mayweather is scheduled to fight May 5 in Las Vegas against an as-yet unnamed opponent. "June 9 is perfect," Arum said. "May 5 is out; that's impossible."

The extra time is needed for construction of an arena, said Arum, claiming the fighters could generate an extra $40 million by fighting at a 40,000-plus-seat venue on the Las Vegas Strip rather than holding the bout at the 16,000-seat MGM.

"I want to hear . . . that they're willing to move to June 9," Arum said. "Then we can sit down and work out a deal."

While Pacquiao appeared to be more eager for the fight when the two first began verbally sparring in 2009, Mayweather has taken the lead in recent months, stepping up his campaign since Pacquiao's narrow win over Juan Manuel Marquez in November.

NCAA president Mark Emmert said he believes that two significant new rules - a $2,000 stipend toward the full cost of attendance for athletes and a 4-year scholarship rather than year-to-year renewals - will survive override efforts at this week's annual NCAA convention. Emmert believes the NCAA board will modify the stipend's two provisions that have caused the greatest concern - Title IX compliance and the budget impact of immediate implementation.
