Southeastern Pa. swimming notes

A year ago, Germantown Academy swim coach Dick Shoulberg told then-junior Arthur Frayler that he was going to give Frayler only two chances to beat Fran Crippen's school record of 4 minutes, 25.9 seconds in the 500-yard freestyle.

Frayler, who usually swims shorter distances, had his first chance three weeks ago, and he tied Crippen's record. Told he had one more chance, Frayler said he didn't want to do it in respect to Crippen.

Crippen, a 2002 GA graduate, died in an open water swim in October 2010 in the United Arab Emirates. He had worked with Frayler in his training.

At the Pan American Games this past fall, Frayler won the 1,500 meters and took second place in the open-water distance swim.

"I told Arthur he had to do it," Shoulberg said of going after Crippen's mark. "I said when you break the record, we'll mount it on a plaque to take to [the University of] Florida when you go there to swim next season. You can mount it on the wall of your room, and you thank Fran each time you look at it."

Frayler's second chance came Tuesday. He set a record of 4:24.65 in the 500 during the Patriots' 118-67 victory over Penn Charter.

Indians serve notice. The Souderton girls' swim team has served notice that it's once again going to be a factor in the District 1 and PIAA championships. The Indians swept all three relays and won gold medals in two individual events two weekends ago in an invitational meet at Bucknell.

At the same time, the Souderton boys, who have been absent from the postseason scene in recent years, also made people take notice. They won two of the three relays at Bucknell and also won two individual races.

Senior Ann Fadden took a gold medal in the 50-yard freestyle, and junior Laureana Zrada captured the gold in the 200 freestyle for the girls.

Senior Ozzie Moyer, one of several standout Indians divers, finished first in his specialty. Moyer has committed to dive for North Carolina next season. Freshman Elliott Miller won the other gold medal, in the 200 freestyle.

The meet also gave Souderton a chance to showcase two sophomores: Kevin Musterat, a sprint freestyler, and Triston Loux, a butterflyer.

Coach Todd Bauer said Loux has his eye on the school record in the 100 butterfly, 52.10 seconds. Loux has a career best of 53.3.

SMU-bound. Council Rock North senior Madison Meyer will take her swimming skills to Southern Methodist University next season.

Meyer, who chose SMU over Delaware, Eastern Carolina, and North Carolina-Wilmington, said she felt very comfortable after meeting the coaches at the Dallas university.

"I also wanted a new atmosphere, and I think Dallas will give me that," she said. "I have dreamed of swimming for a Division I school for a long time."
