Two men and a woman were critically injured Friday when their car ran under a parked flatbed truck loaded with lumber on Washington Avenue in South Philadelphia, police said.

The roof of the 1993 Honda accord was peeled back in the 8:30 a.m. crash and police said accident investigators were surprised no one was killed outright.

Police said it appeared the car was traveling at high speed when it ran into the rear of the flatbed truck on Washington Avenue at 16th Street.

Firefighters had to cut the victims out of the car.

The 51-year-old male driver and a 49-year-old man who was in the back seat were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, police said. A woman who was in the front passenger seat was taken to Jefferson University Hospital.

All three were in critical condition.

Investigators are trying to determine the events leading up to the crash.
