Penn State announces six members of O'Brien staff

Posted: January 13, 2012

PENN STATE officially announced six members of Bill O'Brien's football coaching staff, although the names have been leaking out all week.

The school already had announced that Larry Johnson would return as defensive line coach. Additionally, Penn State said Ron Vanderlinden would remain as linebackers coach; Stan Hixon had been named assistant head coach and wide receivers coach; and Charles London (running backs), Mac McWhorter (offensive line) and John Strollo (tight ends) would be joining the staff.

"I said last weekend we were going to put together the best staff for Penn State and I firmly believe we have done that," O'Brien said in a statement. "It was crucial to get an experienced, passionate and enthusiastic staff together quickly so they can hit the ground running. All of these coaches have varied and successful backgrounds coaching in the NFL, college and high school across the country."

More coaches will be announced when school employment procedures have been completed.

According to a press release, O'Brien is still looking for a defensive coordinator, a secondary coach and a quarterback coach. According to reports, however, those jobs already have been filled. Ted Roof is leaving Central Florida after 33 days to become the defensive coordinator. George Godsey, who assists O'Brien with the New England Patriots, will be the quarterbacks coach; and South Carolina special teams coach John Butler will be the defensive backs coach.

O'Brien will not name an offensive coordinator and will call his own plays.
