Sat. S.J. wrestling roundup: Local teams battle in Va. Duals

Two of South Jersey's top wrestling programs collided in Virginia on Saturday as Timber Creek edged Camden Catholic in the prestigious 18th annual Virginia Duals Tournament in Hampton, Va.

Wrestling in the consolation round of the National High School Division, the Chargers took a 30-24 win over Camden Catholic, which finished fourth four times in previous trips to the tournament.

Timber Creek was helped by several close decisions, including Alan Nguyen's 1-0 decision over Shawn Stone at 113 pounds, Brandon Keller's 3-2 verdict over Chad Walsh at 138, Bryce Shade's 9-6 win over Frank Varallo at 152 and Keith Baumgardner's 5-3 effort against Joe Flemming at 160.

Timber Creek won seven of nine bouts from 106 pounds to 160, and the Irish won four of five bouts in the upper weights, including Jared Alwan's 20-second pin at heavyweight and Joe Mazzochette's overtime decision at 195.

The Chargers' bid to wrestle for third place in the 16-team bracket ended with a 52-10 loss to South Plainfield.

In the American High School Division at the Virginia Duals, Haddonfield won a pair of close consolation decisions, edging Grundy (Va.) by 30-28, and beating Hanover (Va.), 36-35.

For the Bulldogs, Phil Tanenbaum (126 pounds) and Carson Stack (220) each won twice on the mat in those matches.

Blue Devil Duals. Hammonton won its own tournament, capped by a 35-33 thriller over Pennsville in which Bobby Frederico notched a key 1-0 decision over Cody Dooley at heavyweight. Pennsville won three straight middle-weight pins, but Hammonton answered with Phil Bakuckas' technical fall and Steve Andrescavage's 52-second pin among eight Blue Devils wins.

Winslow Township got past Williamstown, 42-35, in the third-place bout with pins by Robert McNeil (126), Cole James (132), Emmanuel Mitchell (182) and Gil Maisonet (195).

Nonleague. Lenape, Paul VI and host Pennsauken each went 2-1 in a quad meet that also included Gateway/Woodbury. Paul VI clipped Lenape, 32-27, in a feature matchup as Mark Alberto (195) had a pin, and Nick Theisen (132) and Jamie Calhoun (160) added key decisions in close matches.

Lenape got past Pennsauken, 39-30, with pins by Nicholas Dannenfelser (106), Danny Kennedy (132), Matt Jolly (160) and Alex Felderstein (182), but Pennsauken jolted Paul VI, 54-23. For the Indians, Jacob Henderson had an 11-second pin at 113.

Haddon Township dominated a quad meet at Overbrook, dumping the host Rams by 75-6, and adding a 64-9 win over Maple Shade and a 63-15 triumph over Gloucester Catholic. The Hawks' Brian Navarro, Eric Rodriguez and Mike McCutcheon each won three times on the mat.

Delsea handed host Moorestown a 45-21 setback with pins by Bryan Dobzanski (195), Sean Redden (220) and William Porch (Hwt.) in the upper weights. Delsea also beat Lower Cape May, 48-19.

Woodstown and Highland each twice at Deptford. The Wolverines topped the host Spartans, 62-16, and defeated St. Joseph, 74-3, with two pins each by James Lodge, Connor Bestwick, Billy Williams, Dustin Baionno and Todd Batten.

For Highland, Mikal Jenkins had two pins at 126 as the Tartans got past Deptford, 44-27, and beat St. Joseph, 57-18.
