Car description in fatal beating was wrong

January 19, 2012|BY JULIE SHAW, shawj@phillynews.com

Police this afternoon announced that the car they are seeking that was involved in the early morning Saturday fatal beating of a recent Temple University graduate may not be an "older-model maroon sedan, possibly a Mazda" after all.

In a news release, police said: "Homicide Detectives have determined that the previous vehicle information may have been erroneous." Police did not immediately have new details on the car, just saying that they will be forthcoming.

The victim, Kevin Kless, 23, was trying to hail a cab about 2:25 a.m. Saturday on Chestnut Street, between 4th and 5th, with his girlfriend and another woman. He ended up yelling at one cabbie, who had his light on, but who had passengers inside.

Story continues below.

Another car with four men inside - whom police have described as "light-complected" and "possibly Hispanic" - might have thought Kless was yelling at them.

Three of the four men got out of that car and ended up viciously beating Kless, who died 17 hours later at a local hospital.

There is $20,000 in reward money for tipsters in this case. Anyone with information should contact homicide detectives at 215-686-3334 or the Citizens Crime Commission at 215-546-TIPS (546-8477).
