The former coach of the Ukrainian national hockey team was arrested in Philadelphia last weekend and charged in the sexual assaults of two young hockey players in Mount Airy.

Ivan Pravilov, 48, who operates the Unique Hockey School, hosts hockey camps along the Eastern seaboard. Pravilov, who according to his website is also a director of the New England Sports Academy in Massachusetts, lives in Cherry Hill and maintains an apartment in Mount Airy, according to federal investigators.

Following an investigation by Immigration and Customs agents, the U.S. Attorney's office on Wednesday filed charges alleging Pravilov transported minors across state lines for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct.

"We believe there are many more victims," said a spokesman for ICE.

Pravilov faces similar charges in his home country, according to an Interpol warrant.

Pravilov's youth program, also known as Druzhba78, has brought hundreds of young Ukrainian players to the United States to train with American teenagers. The Ukrainians, driven by dreams of playing in the NHL or winning college hockey scholarships, travel from city to city and are housed with local host families from Quebec to Washington D.C.

In July, a host parent walked in on a naked Pravilov and an unclothed 14-year-old boy. The parent alleged the coach had been sexually molesting the child. In October, a second host parent contacted police claiming the same boy had witnessed Pravilov engaging in sexual activity with another 14-year-old, according to court documents.

Shortly after New Years, Pravilov took up residence with the two boys at a Mount Airy apartment, a short distance from the Old York Road Ice Rink in Elkins Park where they often practiced. On Jan. 3, the boys were sleeping on mattresses on the floor when the first boy woke to see Pravilov kneeling near the second boy, breathing heavily and exposing his genitals. When the first boy made noise to indicate he was awake, hoping Pravilov would stop, Pravilov hit him on the head and told him to go to sleep, according to court documents.

As the second boy pretended to sleep, Pravilov allegedly took the child's hand and placed it on his exposed penis. When the first boy made noise again, Pravilov pulled covers over the boy's head and ordered him to go back to sleep, the court papers state.

The next day, the two boys made a pact to sleep in the same bed and if either was awakened by the coach, they would wake the other.

On Jan. 13, Pravilov learned that one of them had let friends know about the alleged sexual assaults and confronted the first boy in an ice rink locker room, according to court documents.

"Should I kill you?" Pravilov said to the boy, and struck him on his neck. The investigating officer said she could still see the mark on the boy the next day.

Pravilov was being held last night in a federal facility pending a preliminary hearing Friday in federal court. If tried and found guilty, he faces up to 40 years in prison.
