Fri. Pa. boys' roundup: Penn Charter upends Malvern

With a late charge on Friday night, Penn Charter toppled previously unbeaten basketball power Malvern Prep, and Lower Moreland handed Holy Ghost Prep its first loss of the season.

John Moderski scored 13 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter and knocked down eight free throws as host Penn Charter topped Malvern, 56-44. Penn Charter (8-8 overall, 2-2 Inter-Ac) limited the Friars to just nine points in the fourth. Moderski added 15 rebounds.

Malvern Prep (17-1, 4-1) is ranked No. 3 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer.

Around the Inter-Ac, junior forward Mike Hayes scored 17 of his game-high 19 points in the first half and Chestnut Hill held off visiting Germantown Academy, 53-48. Hayes knocked down his first five shots from the field and finished the half shooting six for seven.

Bicentennial. Visiting Lower Moreland made sure to cash in on its trips to the foul line, as the Lions (9-5 overall, 7-1 Bicentennial) knocked down 20 of their 29 free throws in the fourth quarter en rout to downing Holy Ghost, 50-43. Mike Mangan poured in a game-high 17 points. Holy Ghost drops to 15-1, 6-1.

Also in the Bicentennial, junior point guard Max Drake recorded his 1,000th career point on a floater at the end of the first half as Plumstead Christian topped visiting Morrisville, 62-48. He finished with 22 points and is the third player in school history to reach 1,000.

Eric Williams tied the game in regulation and won it in overtime as MaST Charter turned away visiting Springfield (Montco), 54-53. Williams sank a field goal with 12 seconds left in the fourth and then hit his clinching shot with 1.9 seconds left in OT.

Ron Burrell dropped in six of his game-high 12 points as Delco Christian knocked off host Jenkintown, 38-31. Henry Miller chipped in with 11 points.

Catholic. Senior guard Kyle Adkins drove through traffic and hit a game-winning layup as time expired to lift host Archbishop Wood over Father Judge, 67-65.

Adkins finished with six points and five assists. Joe LoStracco poured in 12 of his 23 team-high points after halftime and added 15 rebounds.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 5-1 in league play. Steve Griffin led Judge with a game-high 24 points.

Also in the Catholic League, Secean Johnson grabbed eight rebounds and Shep Garner knocked down five three-pointers as Roman Catholic downed visiting West Catholic, 71-30.

Stephen Vasturia's 10 rebounds and four assists helped St. Joseph's Prep knock off visiting Conwell-Egan, 75-49.
