LATIN SPICES

Chucho Valdes was born to make music, the son of famed Cuban pianist Bebo Valdes. But since his young-adult breakout band Irakere of the '70s, it's been clear Valdes' visions for "Afro-Cuban jazz" would be more bracing and embracing than most. Opening for Valdes and the Afro-Cuban Messengers is the spicy Danilo Perez Trio. Merriam Theater, 250 S. Broad St., 7:30 p.m. Thursday, $20-$50, 215-893-1999, www.kimmelcenter.org.
