The Rev. William A. McGuire, 73, senior vice president for administration at Villanova University from 1998 to 2006 and an administrator there since 1979, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, of cerebral vascular disease at Arden Courts in King of Prussia.

Born in Washington, Father McGuire graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School there in 1956 and began his religious studies at the Augustinian Academy in New York City.

He earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy at Villanova University in 1962 and, after being ordained in 1965 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, he earned a master's degree in theological studies at Augustinian College there in 1966.

Father McGuire taught at Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill from 1966 to 1979.

He began his Villanova University career in 1979, serving as assistant dean of admissions until 1982.

Father McGuire was Villanova's assistant dean of liberal arts to 1987, assistant athletic director to 1989, and dean of enrollment management to 1998.

After retiring from the university in 2006, he was treasurer from 2007 to 2009 for the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova, which administers Augustinian matters in the Eastern United States, Japan, Peru, and South Africa.

A wake was set for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at the campus church of St. Thomas of Villanova, before a 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass there. Burial will be private.
