Wed. S.J. boys' and girls' roundup: Win No. 300 for Bruno

John Bruno, who has spent his entire boys' basketball coaching career at Ocean City, posted his 300th victory in front of family and friends Wednesday, when the host Red Raiders hammered Hammonton, 55-35, in a Cape-Atlantic League game.

Matt Bosch helped make the celebration possible, scoring 9 of his 23 points in a 20-10 third-quarter run that enabled Ocean City to take command.

"The honor is really in being able to coach all these different kids over the years and to be motivated to keep going this long," Bruno said. "All the number really means is I've been doing this for a long time."

Ryan Gill and Chris Turner added 10 points apiece for the Red Raiders. Christian Mortellite's 16 points led Hammonton.

In other Cape-Atlantic action:

Two foul shots by Vance Matthews (11 points) with 3.5 seconds remaining capped host Lower Cape May's 46-42, come-from-behind win over Oakcrest. Bobby O'Donnell (13 points) and Shaq Lovelace (11) rounded out the Tigers' double-figure scoring.

Jake Knight and Matt Dennis combined for 42 points, including seven baskets beyond the arc, and Cedar Creek converted 14 of 18 free throws to hold off host Cape May Tech, 60-54. Khali Wilson had 19 points and Clinton Freeman contributed 14 points and a dozen rebounds for Tech.

Tenth-ranked Holy Spirit opened the game on a 24-5 run and never looked back, getting 17 points from Paul Moore in cruising past visiting Vineland, 59-39.

Girls' Basketball

Jasmine Miro sank a pair of free throws to put Buena ahead with 8 seconds left, and Lynn Brown came up with her fifth steal on the ensuing inbounds pass to seal the Chiefs' 39-38 win over visiting Wildwood Catholic in the Cape-Atlantic League.

Miro dished out five assists to go with her team-high 14 points, Janay Smith posted a double-double (11 points, 14 rebounds), and Julia DiBiase cleared 15 boards in extending Buena's winning streak to four. Katie McCallion scored 11 of her game-high 18 points in the second half, rallying the Crusaders from an 8-point deficit.

Also in the Cape-Atlantic, Shatiera Smith scored 9 of her 11 points in a 23-6 second-half blitz to rally host Millville past St. Joseph, 34-31. Dana DiRenzo (14 points) had sparked the Wildcats to an early 14-point lead.

Kennedy Johnson's 13-point, 17-rebound performance typified eighth-ranked Sacred Heart's domination of visiting Pleasantville, 69-33. Mandy Buirch (13 points), Lexi Bruno (12 points, 9 assists) and Brittany Harden (10 points) joined in the Lions' offensive onslaught.

Ocean City's Julia Duggan tossed in 25 points to pave the way for a 49-18 victory at Hammonton.

Nonleague. Tymesha Hawkins and Kelyn Sequeira had eight points apiece to pace Pennsauken Tech's balanced attack to a 30-21 home win over Medford Tech.
