6 die in weekend crashes in city, suburbs

Six people lost their lives on area roads since Friday evening.

Four of them were killed in Philadelphia, including a 5-year-old boy and a 23-year-old motorcycle rider.

The boy died Sunday morning after being thrown from a an SUV struck by a car at the intersection of York and 24th Streets. The boy's grandmother was driving the Ford Expedition westbound on York, when she went through a red light, police said. The impact with a Toyota Corolla caused the SUV to flip. The grandmother, her 21-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old granddaughter were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.

Early Sunday morning, a driver and a backseat passenger were killed when a 2004 Dodge Dakota pickup truck hit a utility pole in the 2300 block of Richmond Street, near Girard Avenue, according to police.

Driving was Annette Nash, 46, of the 2700 block of Willits Road. The passenger was Daniel Cordero, 45, of the 2400 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. Both were pronounced dead at Hahnemann University Hospital shortly before 5 a.m., about an hour after the accident, police said. A 45-year-old woman, who was sitting in the front seat, was in stable condition at Hahnemann. No other vehicles were involved.

Another fatal one-car crash happened early Saturday in Springfield Township, Bucks County. About 3:21 a.m., Vernon Fegley Jr., 43, of Northampton was driving southbound on Route 212 when his 2008 Acura crossed into the northbound lane, went onto a berm, and hit a telephone pole and two trees, according to state police. His passengers, two women and a man, all 28, suffered extensive injuries, but state police did not elaborate.

The deadly motorcycle accident happened shortly after 11:30 Friday night in Philadelphia's Port Richmond section. The victim was identified as Nhan Chinh Hoang, 23, of the 3100 block of E Street in Kensington. Apparently, in trying to avoid a car pulling out of a Wawa, the bike slid into a car and a light pole, police said.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m. Friday evening, a pedestrian was struck by a Lincoln Town Car as she tried to cross Easton Road near Girard Avenue in Horsham. The victim was Sharon Minnick, 50, of Pottstown. The Town Car driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Minnick had been wearing dark clothes.
