DN Editorial: Pennsylvania, the Bible Belt?

January 31, 2012

THE Pennsylvania House has declared 2012 "The Year of the Bible." An official government resolution now calls the Bible the "word of God" and defines a "national need to study and apply the teachings of the holy scriptures." The vote: 193-0.

If 2012 is the Year of the Bible, that means it can't be the Year of: God, Jesus, America, patriotism, jobs, puppies wearing flag bandanas, babies, and, of course, babies with jobs wearing flag pins.

Jokes aside, this sort of pandering is a problem. It implies that Pennsylvania has a state religion, which sends an unfriendly message to non-Christians. For all the resolution's talk about the importance of the Bible in the nation's founding, we read somewhere about a separation of church and state. Let's honor that, please.
