Eats Beat 2/2/12

February 02, 2012

* Calling it "a logical extension of the work we've done for the past two decades at London Grill," Chef Michael McNally and Terry Berch McNally will open Paris Wine Bar (2303 Fairmount Ave., 215-978-4545) on Feb. 9. The 50-seat sister venue to London Grill will focus on Pennsylvania wines - including a rotating selection tapped from kegs made especially for the restaurant - priced at $7 to $9.50 a glass, plus a French-inspired menu. Hours are 4 p.m.-midnight Thursday through Sunday.

Story continues below.

* The focus is on Dickens as the Free Library of Philadelphia celebrates Charles Dickens' 200th birthday all year. As we head into February, the month of the Brit author's birth, it's no surprise British-themed restaurant The Dandylion (124 S. 18th St., 215-558-2500) is getting into the act. Sundays through the month, the restaurant will host 10 a.m. and noon readings of children's adaptations of Dickens books, with free scones and tea cakes, too. Order a hearty English breakfast for $13.

*  Forget the dip and chips for Super Bowl Sunday. Go upscale with takeout from Davio's Philadelphia (111 S. 17th St., 215-563-4810). Order from the Spring Roll Takeout Menu: Philly Cheese Steak, Chicken Parm, Buffalo Chicken and Shrimp Cotija. Or head to the restaurant for draft/spring roll specials, 3-10 p.m. Sunday.

* Gluten avoidance is a little easier in South Philly now that Tote (toe-tay) bakery has opened (1024 S. 9th St., 215-551-5511). Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. Baked goods run the gamut from breads to pizzas to sweet and savory pastries, all gluten-free.

* In the mood for some Mexican-"influenced" grub? Head to the Tortilla Press (703 Haddon Ave., Collingswood, N.J., 856-869-3345), which will donate a portion of tonight's proceeds to Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice in Marlton, N.J.

*  The Ark of Taste stops at Di Bruno Brothers (1730 Chestnut St., 215-665-9220) from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 for an "Indigenous Food & Wine Tasting" featuring items the Ark has cataloged in its worldwide search for "small-scale quality productions threatened by industrial agriculture, environmental degradation and homogenization." Guest speakers will discuss the project. Tix are $35 in advance; www.slowfoodphilly.org.
