IN THE 2009 football season, Zaire "Bam" Anderson was mostly a fullback for Frankford High, and his college prospects were dim and dimmer.

Ah, but he'd also started in two games at linebacker - starred, even - and he began to think, "I like this position better anyway. Let's see where it can take me."

Then came yesterday. The 6-1, 220-pound Anderson, rated way up there on national prospect lists for junior-college players, signed a letter of intent with Nebraska. He'd spent two seasons playing for Riverside Community College, in California and fended off other schools since making an oral commitment in October.

Story continues below.

"I only made two visits - Nebraska and Texas Tech," Anderson said. "I didn't want to confuse myself by making others. Nebraska was the first big school to recognize my talent and make me an offer. The first one to say, 'Yeah, he can play.'

"You know how it goes. Once a big school offers you, the word spreads, and others start doing that, too. But like I said, Nebraska was first. I appreciated that. So I was happy when I visited there and wound up liking it. A real nice environment."

Anderson came to Riverside's attention in an interesting way. His brother, Zimier McCloud, who starred at George Washington, is friends with Sam Rogers, a former NFL player who is friends with Darrin Chiaverini, another former NFL player who's an assistant at Riverside.

"Zimier sent Riverside my linebacker tape, and coach Chiaverini said he really liked it," Anderson said. "I flew out there and next thing I knew, I was playing for them. I knew I had the talent to go D-I, but to wind up at a place like Nebraska? . . . Didn't picture that."
