February 06, 2012

HERE'S WHAT WILL make news in Philly this week:

SCHOOLS

Supe-search hearing

The Philadelphia School District will continue its series of community forums as part of the search for a new superintendent with three meetings this week.

The meetings, organized by the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania and the Penn Project for Civic Engagement, are all at 6:30; tonight at West Philadelphia High School, Wednesday at Strawberry Mansion High School and Thursday at Edison High School.

No R.S.V.P.s are required.

DEVELOPMENT

Schuylkill trail plan

Expansion of the Schuylkill River Trail to the west bank of the river - connecting neighborhoods from Powelton Village, University City, Bartram's Gardens and Southwest Philadelphia - will be discussed Wednesday night. Plans will also be presented on connecting the new Grays Ferry Crescent segment on the east bank of the trail.

"The gaps are in places that are in underserved communities; by making these connections, neighborhoods that don't have green space or access to the riverfront will have huge benefits," said Sarah Clark Stuart, campaign director for the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. "And it's a wonderful - and free - way to commute to Center City from outlying neighborhoods."

The meeting is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the University of Pennsylvania Museum, 3260 South St.

COURTS

Tomorrow

Sentencing is scheduled in federal court for a Bala Cynwyd man who pleaded guilty in July to fraud and money-laundering charges.

Authorities said Ira J. Pressman operated PJI Distribution Corp., which specialized in buying and quickly reselling closeout merchandise. Prosecutors said most of the closeout deals were fictitious and Pressman used the money for personal expenses and to pay off previous investors, bilking 20 investors out of more than $6 million, between June 2006 and February 2011.

Thursday

Two Philadelphia men are scheduled to be sentenced for their roles in a credit-card and bank-fraud ring.

Jamal Jenkins and Kharim Kilgore pleaded guilty in the case last November.

Authorities charged 16 defendants in the case, and 12 have entered pleas, but only one has been sentenced to date.

CITY HALL

Cue PhillyCAM!

PhillyCAM, the nonprofit public-access channel with a mission to broadcast locally produced programs on neighborhood news, arts, culture and youth issues, will hold the grand opening of a new studio on Wednesday.

Mayor Nutter is scheduled to conduct a countdown at 2 p.m. that will be followed at 7 p.m. with a live broadcast. The channel launched two years ago, but this marks its new home at 699 Ranstead St., just steps from the Liberty Bell Pavillion.
