February 06, 2012|Staff Report

A construction lift being used for facade work on a church building behind the Basilica Cathedral of Ss. Peter and Paul toppled over today, crushing a worker's leg, police said.

The 33-year-old worker was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in stable condition, police said.

The mobile lift fell about 2:15 p.m. across 18th Street near the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Police said the man was engaged in unspecified work on the facade when the lift toppled over, dropping the worker on the other side of the street.

Officials were working to remove the lift before the viewing scheduled later today for Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua at the cathedral.
