MLB: The Softbank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League have signed former major-league pitcher Brad Penny to a one-year contract. The 33-year-old righthander is expected to arrive in Japan on Wednesday. Financial terms of the deal were not released. Penny went 11-11 last season for the Detroit Tigers with a 5.30 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 31 games.
SOCCER: In London, Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez's late header salvaged a 3-3 draw at Chelsea that left the champions two points behind leader Manchester City.
American midfielder Sacha Kljestan put Anderlecht ahead for good with a goal on a free kick from about 30 yards in the 36th minute as the hosts beat Genk, 4-2, in the Belgian league.
WINTER SPORTS: Julia Mancuso won a super-G in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, for her first World Cup victory of the season, while Lindsey Vonn skied off the course and did not finish. It was the first time two different American women have won World Cup races on consecutive days since December 2006, when it was also Vonn and Mancuso.
Bode Miller failed to finish the downhill in Chamonix, France, and Romed Baumann won a World Cup super-combined race by 3.27 seconds.
Norway's Emil Hegle Svendsen raced past Andreas Birnbacher of Germany to win a men's 15-kilometer biathlon World Cup event in Oslo. American Tim Burke was eighth, 1 minute back.
Daniela Iraschko of Austria won her second straight women's World Cup ski-jump title in Hinzenbach, Austria. Sarah Hendrickson was second and fellow American Lindsey Van took third.
