Last-second layup dooms LaSalle

RICHMOND, Va. - With 5.8 seconds left to play, Richmond forward Derrick Williams hit an under-the-basket layup to break an tie game and boost the Spiders to a 78-76 victory over visiting LaSalle on Wednesday night.

After taking a 40-38 lead at the half, the Explorers found themselve in a four-point deficit early in the second half. The teams played most of the half point for point, but the Spiders (13-12, 4-6 A-10) held La Salle at arm's length. As the clock ticked down to fewer than five minutes, guard Tyreek Duren netted back-to-back buckets to hand the lead back to the Explorers (17-8, 6-4 A-10).

But Williams tied the game again at 76 before his final layup gave Richmond the win. The leading scorers for La Salle were Duren with 17 points, Sam Mills with 16 and Ramon Galloway with 15.
