Cover-2: N.Y. gives Giants a super welcome

Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented the New York Giants with keys to the city on Tuesday.

Many fans, a number of whom had arrived at the ceremony after seeing the parade to honor the team, watched the presentation on large monitors that had been set up on the streets surrounding City Hall.

Former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan began the presentation, his "Go New York City!" cheer echoing through the streets.

The parade drew diehard fans and throngs of office dwellers to the windows of their buildings. Dozens chucked mountains of shredded paper onto Broadway.

Later on Tuesday about 30,000 fans flocked to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., to greet the team.

Noteworthy

Ruston Webster, the Tennessee Titans new general manager, said he understands why some fans want Peyton Manning to continue his NFL career in the state where he played in college. But Ruston said he is satisfied with the quarterbacks his team has now, Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker.

Elsewhere: Ricky Williams told the Baltimore Ravens he plans to retire. Playing as a backup to Ray Rice this year, Williams ran for 444 yards and scored two touchdowns. . . . The Bears hired Jeremy Bates to coach their quarterbacks, reuniting him with Jay Cutler. . . . The Bills re-signed kicker Rian Lindell and hired former star Pete Metzelaars to be their tight ends coach.
