A Mississippi state lawmaker sponsored legislation this week that would rename the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America."
State Rep. D. Stephen Holland introduced the bill on Feb. 7. According to the bill, the moniker would apply only to his home state.
Holland's bill provides that: "For all official purposes within the State of Mississippi, the body of water that is located directly south of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties shall be known as the Gulf of America ... The act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2012."
