Delsea wins sectional in thriller

Curt Delia won his 28th match of the season, clinched another South Jersey title for Delsea, and probably set an unofficial high-jump record for a wrestler.

That's how much air the senior 145-pounder got in leaping into the waiting arms of his teammates after his decision over Buena's Dillon Berghof in Friday night's final bout, which propelled Delsea to a dramatic 34-31 victory in the South Jersey Group 2 championship match.

"It was such an unbelievable feeling, I can't even describe it," Delia said. "It was like the whole championship was on my back."

Delia's 7-3 victory in a matchup of two of the best wrestlers in the building secured the Crusaders' 10th sectional title and fourth in the last five years.

The Crusaders (21-1) will seek their first state title since 1991 at Sunday's championships at Toms River North. Delsea will face David Brearley in one semifinal, with Raritan meeting High Point in the other.

Derrick DeWoody (160), Marshall Brooks (182), Sean Redden (195), and Bryan Dobzanski (220) recorded pins as Delsea built a 28-6 lead before a near-capacity crowd that included chanting student sections from both schools.

"What a great high school environment," Buena coach Doug Castellari said.

Said Delsea coach Greg Sawyer: "I think it was louder than Toms River."

Brooks recorded the key victory in that early stretch, rallying from an 11-6 deficit to pin Ryan Herald in 3 minutes, 15 seconds.

"I knew I just had to keep fighting," Brooks said.

Sawyer called Brooks' dramatic victory "a game-changer."

Buena (16-7) had lost to Delsea by 46-23 on Dec. 30. But this was a different Chiefs team.

"Our kids really stepped up," Castellari said.

With Luis Rivera (113) scoring a major decision, Chaz Bramble (120) winning by technical fall, and Billy Ward (126) improving to 29-3 with a forfeit, Buena battled back into contention.

Jarrett Pierotti's major decision at 132 pounds gave Buena a 31-28 lead. When Delsea's John Hennelly scored a decision at 138 pounds, the teams headed into the final bout tied at 31.

"What more could you ask for?" Castellari wondered.

Delia entered the bout with a 27-1 record. He is a two-time district champion, and three-time Region 8 place-winner.

Berghof, a junior, entered with a 27-3 record. He won a district title as a sophomore.

Delia got a takedown in the first 30 seconds, tilted Berghof for two back points, and recorded another takedown for a 6-1 lead.
