Fri. S.J. girls' roundup: Vineland swims to quarterfinal victory

Rachel Bernhardt took first in a pair of individual events and helped host Vineland swim away with the 200-meter medley relay, as the third-seeded Clan slipped past No. 6 seed Atlantic City, 92-78, on Friday in the South Jersey Public A quarterfinals.

Bernhardt prevailed in the 50 freestyle in 27.81 seconds, and grabbed the 100 breaststroke gold medal in 1 minute, 17.39 seconds.

South Jersey Public B. Emily Rollo won the 50 freestyle (26.33) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.05), and Jessie Cashman came in first in the 200 freestyle (2:10.40) and 100 backstroke (1:05.93) to highlight top-seeded Haddonfield's 128-42 romp at No. 8 seed GCIT.

Central Jersey Public A. Second-seeded Cherokee had a pair of double winners - Morgan Sage (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly) and Isabel Obregon (200 individual medley, 100 backstroke) - in rolling past No. 7 seed Robbinsville, 106-64.

 

Basketball

Alliya Butts had 14 points, Ashli Jeune and Amanda Offenback added 12 apiece and host Holy Cross benefited from clutch foul shooting to hold off Eastern, 50-41, and earn a berth in Sunday's South Jersey Invitational quarterfinals at Kingsway.

The Vikings' Cari Winiarski led all scorers with 16 points.

Burlington County. Larona Timmons had 17 points and Jasmine Smith scored 16 for Pemberton, which broke out to a 20-5 lead and cruised, 49-30, at Medford Tech.

Tri-County. Jewel Brown posted a double-double (21 points, 11 rebounds), Tasia Brooks (16 points) got off to a fast start, and Stephanie Williams dealt four assists and picked up 6 of her 10 points in the final quarter to make host Clayton a 52-47 winner over Wildwood. Serena Seijo's 18 points keyed a late charge by the Warriors.

Nonleague. St. Joseph defeated Haddon Township (18-3) for the second time this season, limiting the Hawks to their lowest point total while handing them their first home loss, 36-26.

Along with replicating the tenacious defensive effort that led the Wildcats to a 36-27 win in the St. Joseph Tournament championship on Dec. 29, Sammi Wetzel and Shannon Metzler combined for 17 points to help halt Haddon Township's 10-game winning streak.

The tandem of Heaven Fillmore (21 points) and Siani Blackston (17) carried Camden to a 58-40 victory at Pennsauken Tech. Kelyn Sequeira scored 18 for the hosts.
