Sat. Pa. wrestling roundup: Westtown wins another FSL crown

Consecutive first-period pins by Evan Rutenbar, Ari Yamaguchi and Will Cauffman helped Westtown put the finishing touches on its eighth consecutive Friends Schools League team championship with a 66-9 domination of visiting George School on Saturday.

Rutenbar improved to 24-1 at 138 pounds this winter with a fall in 1 minute, 5 seconds for one of the unbeaten Quakers' (15-0) six pins in the match. Westtown advanced with a 60-18 semifinal win over Friends' Central earlier in the day.

Yamaguchi used 1 minute to win his match at 145 pounds, and Cauffman (26-6) followed with a fall in 1:50 at 152 pounds. Clay McKee started the Quakers' win with a 52-second fall at 182.

George School reached the title match by squeezing past Academy of the New Church, 40-39.

PIAA Team Tournament. Owen J. Roberts, the only Philadelphia area team to advance to the final day of the states at Hershey, was eliminated in the third consolation round of the Class AAA competition, 33-24, by Easton.

The Wildcats got a 27-second pin by Jim Warta at 220 pounds, and close decisions from Colby Frank (120), Kyle Shronk (152) and Gordon Bolig (182).

Central. Marple Newtown (19-2, 10-0) clinched the league championship with a 44-22 victory over visiting Ridley. Tom Antista's 8-7 decision over Matt Cramer at 145 pounds in the second match provided a spark.

Matt Pelton won an 11-0 major decision at 138 pounds, Tom Meyers won by 2-0 at 126, and Dariel Peniazek added a pin at 145 as Radnor beat visiting Penncrest, 52-10.

Upper Darby blanked visiting Harriton, 77-0, as Austin Petril (113) and Matt Carney (132) posted technical falls, and Ken McGowan (126) hurried to an 18-second pin.

Springfield (Delco) won four matches on the mat in a 44-18 verdict against visiting Lower Merion. The Cougars' Dan Boyer (113) had a technical fall, and Luke Charamella (106) and Joey Sciarrino (138) added pins.

Ches-Mont. Downingtown East swept the six upper weights from Max Leonetti's 4-0 decision at 160 pounds to Sean Snodgrass' pin at 285 while dumping visiting Avon Grove, 44-18. Alex Wait (145) and Matt Bartolotta (220) added first-minute pins.

East also claimed a 33-28 thriller over West Chester Henderson, as Bartolotta had a 10-second pin, and Kevin Sager (138) and Adam Pleines (195) won decisions by one-point margins.
