Sat. Pa. boys' and girls' roundup: Williams breaks marks

Chris Williams' versatility resulted in two meet records and three gold medals for the Strath Haven senior at the 22d annual PTFCA Indoor Track Carnival on Saturday at Lehigh University.

Williams, who will pole vault at the University of Washington next year, won his specialty with a personal-best vault of 15 feet, 9 inches, topping the meet record by 2 inches with the ninth-best effort in the country this season.

Williams, who owns the nation's best time this winter in the 60-meter hurdles at 7.87 seconds, won the event in a record 7.95, and also led off the Panthers' winning 4x200 relay (1:32.98).

In other highlights, Upper Dublin's Francis Ferruzzi ran away from the field in the 3,000, clocking 9:05.11 and beating his closest pursuer by 20.16 seconds.

The girls' competition featured a meet-record high jump of 5-71/4 by Germantown Academy's Megan McCloskey, clipping the mark of 5-71/4 set last year by Upper Dublin's Taylor Morgan.

Swenson won the 4x200 and 4x400 relays, led by Markeeta Thomas, who also won the 400 dash in 58.75.

 

Boys' Basketball

Malvern Prep captured the Inter-Ac League championship with a 55-52 triumph over visiting Germantown Academy.

Malvern led by 11 points after three quarters with Steve Perpiglia getting 14 points in that span, and Brendan Kilpatrick led the Friars with 16 points and 4 blocks. Dennis Gabert contributed 12 points and 7 rebounds.

Prime Time Shootout. Senior forward Erikk Wright scored his 1,000th career point on a three-point basket and finished with 26 points as top-ranked Chester (22-0) knocked off Neptune (N.J.), 78-62, in the showcase at Roselle Catholic. Rondae Jefferson notched 15 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists.

Ches-Mont. Inspired by a 38-26 first half, Octorara defeated West Chester Henderson, 66-61, in the league semifinals at Oxford. Charles Cooper scored 11 of his 23 points in the opening period, and James Brown and Mike Navarro had 10 rebounds each.

Pioneer Athletic. Brendan Casper (18 points) and Geoff Wittenberg grabbed 10 rebounds each, and Brian Miller made a trio of threes as Methacton advanced to the league title game with a 50-46 win over Pottstown at Spring-Ford.

Nonleague. Victor Bozzelli's 12 points and Jordan Kelly's 11 steered Phoenixville past visiting West Chester East, 50-49.
