Sixers Notes: Sixers' Collins going with Allen over Vucevic at center

Posted: February 12, 2012

CLEVELAND - With Sixers center Spencer Hawes skipping this three-game road trip to rest his strained left Achilles tendon, Sixers coach Doug Collins said that he would most likely start rookie Lavoy Allen at center over the next three games and bring fellow rookie Nik Vucevic in with the second unit.

"We'll give Lavoy a look tonight and then play Nik with Thad [Young] and those guys," Collins said before Saturday's game against Cleveland.

Collins said that his coaching staff thought that it might be better if Vucevic comes in with the reserves. Collins didn't say so, but it appears that perhaps Allen, who played four years in college compared with Vucevic's three, is picking up the pro game more quickly.

"I think Nik does better if he gets a chance to see how the game is being played," Collins said. "Nik asks a lot of questions right before he goes into the game. The coaches came to me and they said they thought it might be better if [Nik] came in off the bench."

Hawes is staying home to rest his injury and receive treatment.

Hitting the road

After playing 18 of their last 22 games at the Wells Fargo Center - and 10 of their last 11 - the Sixers on Saturday began a stretch of six of their next seven on the road.

Collins said that he didn't think there would be any hangover from playing so many games at home. In fact, he thinks the Sixers might benefit from it.

"I think our guys are looking forward to it," Collins said. "We had that long stay at home last week and we went to Atlanta and beat a pretty good Atlanta team. If you look at it, we're not really going to have any prolonged road trips in this season. We had our long road trip to start the season and we did pretty well on it. So I think we'll be OK."

Last night's win in Cleveland put the Sixers' road record at 6-4.

Collins was referring to the five-game road trip that began the season. The Sixers went 3-2 on that trip.
