A 14-year-old student was arrested Monday after he allegedly assaulted his science teacher during class at Leeds Middle School in East Mt. Airy, school and police officials said.
The eighth-grade science teacher was taken to Einstein Medical Center after the alleged attack and is being treated, said school district spokesman Fernando Gallard. The unidentified teacher had a swollen face, but was conscious and able to walk after the incident, which took place at 8:40 a.m., Gallard said.
"There was a verbal altercation between the teacher and student and it turned into a physical assault by the student," said Gallard, adding that the teacher suffered injuries to the face, but that the full extent of his injuries isn't known.
