Carroll boys beat St. Joseph's, 67-66

Yosef Yacob scored all of Archbishop Carroll's seven points in the first overtime, and ended the second extra period with two clinching foul shots as the Patriots wrapped up the Catholic League boys' basketball regular season with a 67-66 thriller over visiting St. Joseph's Prep.

The win enabled Carroll to take second place in the league standings away from Prep heading into the upcoming league playoffs.

Prep's Kevin Oberlies tied the game with a layup at the buzzer ending regulation and finished with 10 rebounds, while teammate Stephen Vasturia posted 16 points and 9 boards.

Yacob led all scorers with 29 points and also snagged 7 rebounds, and Lou Dominique chipped in with 14 points and 7 boards.

Also in the league, La Salle celebrated its Senior Day with a 78-63 win over visiting Conwell-Egan. Amar Stukes' 20 points topped five Explorers in double figures.

Archbishop Ryan moved up to fifth place with a 42-28 triumph over visiting Monsignor Bonner, which played its final game before the school's scheduled closing. Kyle Slawter had 10 assists and no turnovers, and Christian Rivera grabbed 6 rebounds for Ryan.

West Catholic's final game was a 60-55 loss at Bishop McDevitt, ending the Burrs' playoff hopes. McDevitt, led by Markiese Chandler's 22 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists, qualified for the District 12 Class AA final.

Roman Catholic's Shafeek Taylor made 12 of 16 shots from the field for a season-high 28 points, and also added 10 rebounds and 9 assists to the Cahillites' 75-66 win over visiting Archbishop Wood.

Regular-season champ Neumann-Goretti wrapped up a 13-0 league schedule with a 78-35 win over visiting Lansdale Catholic. Billy Shank had 13 points and 6 assists, and Derrick Stewart registered 9 rebounds,k 6 assists and 4 blocked shots.

 

Indoor Track and Field

Shacor Hamilton set a meet record of 22.45 seconds and led a 1-2-3 sweep by team champion Cardinal O'Hara in the boys' 200-meter dash at the Catholic League championships at Lehigh University.

La Salle's Tom Coyle won the mile in 4, minutes 21.98 seconds, ran on the winning 4x800 relay, and set a meet record of 8:55.55 in edging Cardinal O'Hara's Dan Savage in the 3,000. Father Judge's John Landis triple jumped to a meet record of 47 feet, 101/4 inches.

In the girls' meet, West Catholic's Jada Steward (60, 200), Archbishop Ryan's Deirdre O'Leary (60 hurdles, pole vault) and Teresa Ortiz of team winner St. Hubert (mile, 3,000) won two events each.
