February 14, 2012

Joe Pavelski had two goals and two assists against a goalie playing in the NHL for the first time in nearly a year, leading the San Jose Sharks past the host Capitals, 5-3, Monday night.

Patrick Marleau, Ryane Clowe, and Brent Burns also scored on Braden Holtby, who was brought up from Hershey of the American Hockey League earlier Monday to make a surprise start for Washington - something he hadn't done since last March. Washington's No. 1 goalie, Tomas Vokoun, was ill, and No. 2 Michal Neuvirth played Sunday in a loss at the New York Rangers.

Joe Thornton collected three assists for the Pacific Division-leading Sharks, and Thomas Greiss made 39 saves.

Canadiens' streak ends

Jaroslav Spacek scored in his return to Montreal as the Carolina Hurricanes snapped the Canadiens' four-game winning streak with a 5-3 victory. Captain Eric Staal scored twice for the Hurricanes, who won for the third time in their last five games and collected at least a point for the fifth straight game (3-0-2).

Comrie retires

Mike Comrie, who twice scored at least 30 goals in a season, retired from the NHL on Monday after a third hip operation in five years.

The 31-year-old center announced his retirement two weeks after his latest hip procedure, saying in a statement he was no longer able to "manage the rigors of NHL play."

Comrie played 589 regular-season games with Edmonton, the Flyers, Phoenix, Ottawa, the New York Islanders, and Pittsburgh. He had 168 goals and 197 assists.

Sutton extended

The Edmonton Oilers and defenseman Andy Sutton agreed to terms on a one-year contract extension.

The 36-year-old has appeared in 33 games with the Oilers this season, collecting three goals, six assists and 56 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-6 245-pound Sutton was acquired by the Oilers last summer from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for fellow defenseman Kurtis Foster.
