JUNIOUS Alexander Rhone Jr. was a computer whiz who didn't hesitate to share his skill with others.

Not only family and friends benefited from knowing Jay - as he was called - but so did young people of middle and low incomes who otherwise would not have had access to the technological knowledge needed today to set them on successful career paths.

Jay Rhone, a longtime employee of Comcast Cable, an operator of his own computer business, a dedicated trainer of others in the computer field, an activist in cancer-support programs, a devoted family man and an active churchman, died Feb. 7. He was 51 and lived in Upper Darby.

Story continues below.

He was a man of many and diverse interests - from Superman comics to fly-fishing, to the music of the Beatles, to gardening, building remote-control model airplanes and rooting for the Eagles.

He even tried prayer to inspire the team to win more games - with mixed results, his family said.

Following his diagnosis of multiple myeloma more than a decade ago, Jay became active in cancer-support groups.

Besides his family, Jay was devoted to his cat, Coco, and his dog, Callie.

"He was a people person, and possessed an inquiring mind and quick wit," his family said.

Jay was born in Philadelphia to Junious A. Rhone Sr. and Shirley Redcross Rhone.

He attended Waldron Academy and graduated from Friends' Central School. He attended Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C., and Hampton University in Hampton, Va., where he majored in business administration.

His first marriage, to April Alexander, ended in divorce. In 1993, he married Robin Dickerson.

Jay's career path started with a job as a pay-per-view manager and supervisor for the old Wade Cablevision in Philadelphia.

He later was employed by Comcast Cable as a national marketing coordinator, a customer-service supervisor and national service-and-installation project coordinator.

Jay generously gave of his knowledge to help young people gain careers in computers. He was a trainer for the Metropolitan Career Center and Solutions for Progress. He moved on to work for Action AIDS in Philadelphia in technical support.

He formed his own computer business, WARP10 Solutions, and became certified in many aspects of networking and systems technology.

Jay later returned to Comcast as a business-service technician in the Horsham office. He assisted business subscribers with their cable, television, telephone and Internet problems.

He also continued his own technical education by enrolling in the New Horizons Computer Learning Center in pursuit of certification in Windows 7.

Jay was active with the Cancer Support Community, formerly the Wellness Community, participating in its many programs and was part of a support group.

Jay was baptized at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in West Philadelphia in his youth and remained active with that church his entire life. He served on the Usher Board, became a trustee and was chairman of the Computerization Committee.

He designed and maintained the church website.

Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by a son, Junious A. "Alex" Rhone III.
