The second best basketball players on the City Six teams

February 15, 2012|By Joe Juliano, Inquirer Staff Writer

It's difficult enough deciding on the best college basketball player in the city, or even the best player on each of the six Division I teams.

So it stands to reason that coming up with a No. 2 player on each of the teams is as tough if not tougher, especially since a No. 3 player on one team may be better than the second-best on another.

But honoring the spirit of inclusion, here are our picks as the best of the next:

Story continues below.

Khalif Wyatt, Temple

Ramon Galloway, La Salle

Samme Givens, Drexel

Carl Jones, St. Joseph's

Tyler Bernardini, Penn

Mouphtaou Yarou, Villanova

Wyatt, a junior from Norristown, is second on the Owls in scoring with a 16.7-point average and is among the Atlantic Ten leaders in steals with 2.2 per game. He is shooting 47.5 percent from the field, 38.4 percent from three-point range, and 83.2 percent on free throws.

Galloway, a transfer from South Carolina who played two seasons of high school basketball at Friere Charter, averages 14.7 points to pace the Explorers. He ranks sixth nationally in three-point shooting with a mark of 47.2 percent, knocking down 2.5 treys per game.

"I think Galloway has made a huge difference" for La Salle, Drexel coach Bruiser Flint said.

Flint has a hustling force under the boards in Givens, who averages 11.8 points and 7.3 rebounds while hitting 52.3 percent of his field goal attempts.

"I'm a big fan of Samme Givens," Martelli said. "I think Samme gives them their identity. I think he's really an extension of Bru, always churning, fighting, and scratching."

Jones is one of several Hawks who have led the team at various times. He tops St. Joseph's in scoring (15.9 points per game) and steals (1.44).

One of three seniors in Penn's starting lineup, Bernardini is second to Zack Rosen with a 14.3-point average and has drained a team-high 54 three-point baskets.

Yarou has gone through a bit of an inconsistent season but still averages career bests of 11.4 points and 8.3 rebounds. The 6-foot-10 junior is one of the Big East leaders in offensive rebounding.
