Rangers, Lundqvist shut out Bruins

February 15, 2012

Henrik Lundqvist made 42 saves for his NHL-leading seventh shutout of the season, and the New York Rangers beat the host Boston Bruins, 3-0, on Tuesday night to widen the gap between the top two teams in the Eastern Conference.

The Rangers won their fourth straight game and opened a nine-point lead over Boston in the East.

Ryan Callahan scored for the sixth time in four games, and Ryan McDonagh and Artem Anisimov also had goals for the Rangers, who were outshot by 42-20. It was Lundqvist's 42d career shutout.

Tim Thomas made 17 saves for the Bruins, who are 6-7-1 in their last 14 games.

Wings set record

The Detroit Red Wings won an NHL-record 21st straight home game, beating the Dallas Stars, 3-1.

Henrik Zetterberg and Brad Stuart scored midway through the first period for the Red Wings, who broke the mark of 20 set by the Boston Bruins during the 1929-30 season, and matched by the Flyers in 1976.

Fans at Joe Louis Arena gave the team a standing ovation in the final minute and were chanting: "21! 21!"

In the NHL's seven seasons with a shootout to eliminate tie games, Boston won 14 straight at home during the 2008-09 season. That was the longest streak until Detroit's current run of dominance in the Motor City.

Tempers flare

Montreal Canadiens forward Scott Gomez and an assistant coach got into a shouting match at practice.

Assistant Randy Ladouceur apparently was upset at what he considered a lack of intensity during a drill. Gomez is among the league's highest-paid players, but has only one goal this season for the struggling Canadiens.

The spat continued for several minutes. Gomez was asked if he had lost the will to play. Gomez scoffed at the question, saying that nothing could be further from the truth.

Gomez said he was not arguing with Ladouceur.

"I was listening to him, he's the coach. It was a conversation. There was no argument," Gomez said. "It was just a coach yelling at a player for messing up a drill."

Off the market

The Bruins and defenseman Johnny Boychuk agreed on a three-year contract extension, the team confirmed, with an annual cap hit of $3.36 million.

Boychuk, who was earning $2 million this season, would have been an unrestricted free agent July 1.
