Hawes not expected back with Sixers until after All-Star break

ORLANDO - The left Achilles' strain that 76ers starting center Spencer Hawes suffered has turned from annoyance to full-blown concern. Before the Sixers' 103-87 loss to the host Orlando Magic last night, coach Doug Collins said he expected Hawes to remain out until after the All-Star Game, which is Sunday, Feb. 26, here in Orlando.

Hawes, who last played on Feb. 6, did not make this three-game road trip, and, earlier in the week, Collins said he hoped his center would be back for tomorrow's home game against the Dallas Mavericks. But Collins said president Rod Thorn had talked with Hawes and his agent and that things didn't look so good for a quick return.

Story continues below.

"We haven't made that determination for sure yet," Thorn said. "But the odds are that he probably will [sit out until after the break]. He's not ready to play yet, and we certainly don't want him to go back out there until he is ready to play. I think the chances are that we won't play him until after All-Star."

In his 14 games this season, Hawes has averaged 10.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists, while shooting 61.1 percent from the floor. His play early in the season was a big reason the team jumped out to its surprising start. With rookies Lavoy Allen and Nikola Vucevic filling in for Hawes, they've still managed to stay in the lead in the Atlantic Division.

"[A second opinion] is probably what we'll do," Thorn said. "That's what you always do with a player. If he's not coming along as well as you'd like, and he's interested in maybe looking at a second opinion then you always do that.

"It's always a concern when a guy who was playing as well as he was playing is not able to play. He's played those two games [missing 15 of past 17 since playing Jan. 16]. As far as the team goes, we've made the adjustments that we could make. Hopefully, he'll be well sooner than later and he'll be ready to go again."

Meeks snuffed

Sixers guard Jodie Meeks expressed hope Tuesday that he would be invited to participate in the three-point shooting contest during All-Star weekend. Those hopes were dashed when the NBA announced its participants yesterday.
