The boyfriend of a 24-year-old pregnant woman found shot to death in the basement of her South Philadelphia home was arrested Thursday and charged with murder in the case, police said.

Tiffany Gillespie's body was found about 2:20 a.m. by her mother in the basement of their home in the 2300 block of South Mildred Street, police said. She had been shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Aaron Fitzpatrick, 19, was arrested and charged with one count of murder.

Another count of murder could be added depending on how long she had been pregnant, police said. The Medical Examiner's Office will make that determination.

The couple had been arguing when Fitzgerald shot her, police said.

Neighbors said Gillespie had a preschool-age daughter and an 8-year-old son, and told neighbors she was six months pregnant with either twins or another girl.

Gillespie's mother declined to speak, shouting threats and obscenities at a reporter.

Neighbors said the family had financial problems and frequently was involved in public altercations that sometimes required police intervention.

"It's such a shock to hear," said Angela Holton, 24, a friend who grew up with Gillespie. "I know they had a lot of stuff going on in the family."
