'Twilight Saga' and appealing 'Penguins'

The selection of new DVD releases is quite thin this week. The biggest title of the week,  The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, came out last weekend, selling a sizzling 3.2 million units.

And with that, we move on to the best of the rest:

Penguins of Madagascar: Operation Get Ducky, Grade B-plus: The eight adventures featuring the four military-minded penguins continue the same great writing and sharp animation that has made this such a good series from the start. This release includes missions with their new pal, Ducky, and some bunny friends.

Story continues below.

If you are looking for an animated series that will entertain young and old, this is it.

Tiny Furniture, Grade D-plus: This coming-of-age film might have been tolerable if the central figure was more appealing. It takes great skill to find just the right tone to play a slacker who doesn't alienate the audience.

Lena Dunham has no such skill. Her turn as the 22-year-old Aura, who has reached a dead end in her life, is so tediously maudlin that the film becomes a test of will. She helps make this such a pretentious movie that a tiny moving van should be sent to pick up Tiny Furniture.

The film's being released because Dunham has a new HBO series, Girls, launching this year.

Also new on DVD this week:

The Rum Diary: A freelance journalist (Johnny Depp) reevaluates his life.

All Quiet on the Western Front: The film is being released on Blu-ray as part of Universal Studios' 100th anniversary celebration.

Chuggington: Brewster's Little Helper: Animated series that reinforces social readiness skills.

The Devil's Rock: Allied forces discover the Nazis are hiding a deadly she-demon.

Dora the Explorer: Dora's Easter Adventure: Dora and Boots must save Hip-Hop Bunny's basket of eggs.

Boy's Choir: An orphaned boy finds support through choir.

Jem & The Holograms: Season 2: Includes 26 episodes of the animated series.

The Adventures of Chuck & Friends: Friends to the Finish: Chuck the Dump Truck goes on adventures to entertain preschoolers.

Beavis & Butt-Head: Volume 4: Features 12 episodes of the TV series from Mike Judge.

Dr. Who: The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe, 2011 Christmas Special: The Doctor helps a woman who has lost her husband during the war.

Dinosaur Train: Eggstravaganza: Buddy learns all dinosaur families are different.

Murder, She Wrote: 4 Movie Collection: Angela Lansbury stars as Jessica Fletcher.

The Visitor: The 1963 film stars Sandra Milo as a woman who takes out an ad in the personal column hoping to find a man to take her away from the village where she lives.

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax Deluxe Edition: TV special that tells the tale of a greedy villain who strips a forest of its lush Truffula trees.

Robin of Sherwood, Set 2: History meets myth in the series starring Jason Connery.

Little Angels: Animated series that teaches practical learning skills like ABCs and numbers.

Family Matters: TV series about the Winslow gang and their nerdy neighbor Steve Urkel (Jaleel White).

Take Shelter: Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain, and Kathy Baker star.

Mama, I Want to Sing: A story about faith, family, and the power of love.
