SRC: Closure vote set

The School Reform Commission last night set March 29 as the date it will vote on which of the nine schools the district recommended closing will shutter their doors in June.

The SRC voted to suspend rules requiring 90 days between official hearings on the closures and a final decision. The hearings will be held on March 3, a Saturday.

Council moves

Freshman City Councilman Bobby Henon introduced a bill yesterday that would allow senior citizens to set their trash outside after 2 p.m. the day before pickup and before 7 a.m. the day of collection.

Currently the law prohibits individuals from setting trash out before 7 p.m. the night before pickup.

Meanwhile, Councilman Bill Green introduced a package of bills yesterday that would require a cost-benefit analysis for all proposed capital projects, the cost of performing specific functions and the effectiveness of those functions and a fiscal-impact analysis for any bill introduced in Council. The city's finance director would be required to provide this information upon request.

And freshman Councilman Kenyatta Johnson has introduced a resolution calling for hearings on selling Philadelphia Gas Works to a private entity. Mayor Nutter announced earlier this week that he plans to proceed with the sale of the utility after a study by Lazard Freres & Co. LLC revealed that selling PGW to a private entity would be advantageous for the city.

The Utility Workers Union is against privatizing PGW.

Street closure re-set

The temporary closure of Walnut Street between 8th and 9th streets has been rescheduled for 10 p.m. Feb. 24 until 5 a.m. Feb. 27. The closure originally had been scheduled for this weekend.

The closure will accommodate the installation of heavy construction equipment. For safety reasons and because of the nature of the work to be performed, the street will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Bribe charge at airport

Federal prosecutors have charged Shannon Gilliam, 29, of Sharon Hill, a Transportation Security Administration training instructor at Philadelphia International Airport, with taking a $200 bribe.

The charging document said that Gilliam accepted the bribe from a security officer between August and October 2011 in exchange for taking a mandatory annual-certification exam for the officer.

Won't C its like again

SEPTA Bus Routes 4 and 16 will replace Route C bus operations on Sunday. The launch of the name change coincides with the release of new schedules for some city and suburban transit services.

The Route C renaming is being done to help improve customer service and communications by assigning names to two distinct route patterns that both currently operate under the C Bus name. Routes 4 and 16 will operate with the same schedules and trip frequency currently covered by the two branches of Route C.
