McCormick beats defending champ to advance

February 18, 2012

Heath McCormick and Pete Fenson will meet in Saturday's 3 p.m. men's championship game at the USA Curling national championships at IceWorks Skating Complex in Aston.

Allison Pottinger's team will play for the women's championship on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Cassie Potter.

McCormick won his 11th straight game earlier in the day, over Fenson, the defending champ, to remain undefeated and advance to the final for the first time.

Fenson's win in Friday night's semifinal match over John Shuster advanced his team to the rematch in the championship. Shuster beat Craig Brown's team earlier Friday in the other quarterfinal to advance to the semifinal.

Story continues below.

McCormick, Fenson, Pottinger and Potter all earned berths in the 2014 U.S. Olympic team trials in November 2013. Potter was a winner over Aileen Sormunen's team in the semifinal on Friday.

Both the men's and women's champions and runners-up qualify for the Olympic trials. Only the winners Saturday advance to the 2012 world championships.
