Pa. Boys: Neumann-Goretti rolls over O'Hara

Billy Shank heated up from behind the arc, Derrick Stewart dominated the low post, and Neumann-Goretti easily turned back visiting Cardinal O'Hara, 77-51, Friday night in the Catholic League boys' basketball quarterfinals.

Shank, a senior guard, hit five of his 11 three-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points. Stewart brought down 11 rebounds. The 6-foot-5 power forward is ticketed for Rider. Sophomore guard Ja'Quan Newtown dished out five assists and dropped in 15 points.

Sean Havink led O'Hara with 18 points. The Lions trailed, 20-5, after one quarter.

In the other quarterfinals, Kevin Oberlies scored a career-high 20 points and hit three threes as St. Joseph's Prep rolled past visiting Archbishop Wood, 76-49.

The win marked the 621st of head coach Speedy Morris' career, tying him for the most by a Catholic League, Inter-Ac League, or Public League coach.

Stephen Vasturia aided the win with 11 rebounds, and Miles Overton knocked down four threes.

Shafeek Taylor grabbed nine rebounds to help Roman Catholic down Archbishop Ryan, 52-43, at Philadelphia University. Taylor finished with a game-high 19 points. Shep Garner and Rashann London chipped in with four assists each. Tyler Reed and Nick Aughenbaugh each dropped in 10 points to lead Ryan.

Yosef Yacob and Alec Stavetski each scored five points in the fourth quarter to help host Archbishop Carroll hold off La Salle, 53-49. Yacob finished with 10 points. Lou Dominique had a team-high 12 for the Patriots, eight of which fell in the first half. Amar Stukes led the Explorers with 15 points.

District 1 Class AAAA. Senior guard Aaron Morgan scored five of his game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter to help Council Rock North turn away upset-minded Central Bucks South, 48-44, in the first round. The seventh-seeded Indians relied on Arron Goodman's 12 rebounds. Dave Knox led 26th-seeded C.B. South with a game-high 17 points.

Kieran Bolger scored his 1,000th career point as Pennsbury easily downed visiting Kennett, 81-67. Bolger reached the mark in the second quarter with a 15-foot jumper. He finished with a game-high 26 points and has 1,007 for his career. Jerrel Burke chipped in with 16 points and six assists.

Brendan Casper scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter to help Methacton pull away from visiting Springfield (Delco), 43-35.
