Dick Jerardi: Making tournament moves

February 20, 2012|By Dick Jerardi

AROUND THE CITY

NEARLY PERFECT

The games began at 11 a.m. and ended at 11:20 p.m. The blowouts came early in the day. The scores kept getting closer, but, until the final moments at the Wells Fargo Center, it really looked like a 6-0 Saturday. Here are the results from first game to last.

NEVER A CONTEST

The NCAA Tournament Committee had to be impressed by Drexel Saturday morning on ESPNU. The Dragons went to Cleveland State, led 19-3 after 8 minutes, led by 29 in the second half and cruised home, 69-49, in what was one of the day's best Bracket Buster showings. Yes, Cleveland State (20-8) has lost four straight, two by a combined five points.

Story continues below.

The Dragons (23-5) have won 15 straight and 21 of 22. They had perfect offensive spacing while shooting 48.9 percent with just seven turnovers. They held CSU to 17-for-63 (27.0 percent). Big men Samme Givens and Daryl McCoy dominated the lane.

BEST FRESHMEN

If there had been a vote taken before the season about the city's best freshman, Drexel's Damion Lee may not have gotten a single vote. If the vote were taken today, he might get every vote but those reserved for La Salle's Jerrell Wright and Villanova's JayVaughn Pinkston. Lee got off early and finished with 18 points.

WHAT IT MEANS

The top six teams in the CAA went 6-0 on the weekend. VCU beat a good Northern Iowa team. George Mason and Old Dominion kept winning. This can't hurt Drexel's at-large chances, as the Dragons get set for their final two regular-season CAA games.

MAKING IT LOOK EASY

Temple (21-5, 10-2 Atlantic 10) shares it, shoots it and wins. The Owls overwhelmed Duquesne (15-11, 6-6) at the Liacouras Center, 78-59, by doing what they do. They shot 57.7 percent and 10-for-19 from the arc. On a rare bad shooting day from Ramone Moore, Khalif Wyatt (24) and Juan Fernandez (20) combined for 44. Moore, by the way, had eight assists. So even when he is not making baskets himself, he finds the players who are. You have to go to Columbia, Mo., to see guards that play any more seamlessly than Temple's.

WHAT IT MEANS

If Temple gets through this week (at La Salle, at Saint Joseph's), it is going to win the A-10 regular season and get the top seed in the tournament. And, if the Owls get through this week without a loss, they will zoom even farther up the NCAA seed list.
