Souderton downs seventh-seeded C.R. North

Luke Moyer half-jokingly said that he left Christopher Dock after two years so that he could play under Dennis Stanton at Souderton.

The senior point guard, in his second season with the team, has certainly thrived in the offensive schemes created by Stanton, a former scoring machine at Ursinus College.

"With what we do, I'm able to read and react, do things to get my teammates involved," Moyer said. "And I can get good looks at the basket, either in transition or designed sets."

Story continues below.

Tuesday night in Newtown, with Moyer producing a game-high 24 points and four assists, 10th-seeded Souderton romped past seventh-seeded Council Rock North, 70-53, in a PIAA District 1 Class AAAA second-round boys' basketball game.

"This was sweet," the 6-foot, 180-pound Moyer said. "We played as a team. On defense, we did a good job of handling our assignments and shutting them down."

Overall, Souderton, which clinched a berth in the state tournament, shot 24 for 44 from the field. Moyer and company were 8 for 17 from beyond the arc.

"We know, if we execute offensively and defensively, that we can play with anybody in this district," said Stanton, in his second year at the helm.

Next for Souderton (19-5) is a Friday night quarterfinal meeting with second-seeded Lower Merion, which topped No. 18 Plymouth Whitemarsh on Tuesday.

Against C.R. North, Moyer shot 6 for 14 from the field (4 for 8 on three-pointers) and 8 for 9 from the foul line.

Oddly, for a point guard, the 18-year-old wears a No. 55 jersey.

"Yeah, I picked that number," Moyer said. "I just wanted to spice things up a bit."

Ryan Connolly, a 6-5, 210-pound senior forward, delivered 17 points, including two treys, six rebounds, and four assists.

Of Moyer, Connolly said, "He does a little bit of everything for us. He penetrates, scores, and takes good care of the ball."

Fellow senior Mark Wonderling contributed 10 points, six boards, six assists, and two steals. Helped by his two second-quarter threes, Souderton led, 32-23, at intermission.

Ahead by 36-28 in the third quarter, the visitors blew it open with a 9-0 spurt that included Moyer's right-wing trey. Connolly's buzzer-beating jumper from the right baseline made it 52-36.

Senior lead guard Aaron Morgan paced Council Rock North (18-6) with 19 points, four boards, and four assists. Backcourt mate Rip Engel, a sophomore, netted 12 of his 17 points in the final quarter.

Council Rock North, still alive in the hunt for a state berth, will begin play in the consolation bracket Friday against Plymouth Whitemarsh.
